Thought on design

What have I learnt on to help me with my poster design. Well 1950s typefaces were thick and bold, no dainty fonts in sight.

The images of people/objects within advert design were almost illustrative, hand drawn almost, but also very grainy. 1950s illustration was almost photo like but less colours and very angular, geometrical. The techniques used to print such work properly was the cause of the texture with the designs.

Emphasis within the posters weren’t always the products name but often a catch line to draw in people to read more. This differs with automotive adverts which were all about the name, and the rest of the text was as tiny as newsprint. Quite often advertisements resembled magazine articles of today, large main picture, small pictures later on at the bottom (showing the process involved in the product), mass of tiny text and of course bold tagline of brand name (depending on what’s more well known).
